Montreal, May 24, 2006 –
Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire, President and Executive
Director of Centraide of Greater Montreal, is pleased to announce
that Michael J. Sabia, President and Chief Executive Officer
of Bell Canada Enterprises, and Rémi Marcoux, Chairman
of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Transcontinental
Inc., will co-chair Centraide’s 2006 fundraising campaign.
Mr. Sabia and Mr. Marcoux will head up a Campaign Cabinet
composed of some thirty influential volunteers from Greater
Montreal’s business community, public sector and trade
union movement, each of whom will chair one of the campaign’s
sectorial fundraising committees.
The members of the Cabinet and their teams will visit some
300 business leaders in order to solicit a corporate donation
and pave the way for next fall’s workplace fund drives.
Centraide of Greater Montreal’s campaign is one of the
largest annual fund drives in the province. More than 200,000
people contribute, mainly through payroll giving. Centraide
is supported by some 2,000 corporations, institutions, and
public and parapublic organizations as well as by the majority
of the large trade unions. It also receives about $3 million
in free ad space and broadcast time which is generously donated
by corporations and the media to inform and mobilize donors.
Campaign 2006 will kick off on September 21 with Centraide’s
traditional March of 1,000 Umbrellas through downtown
Montreal. “What’s special about this march is
that you have the people who work in the community agencies
marching alongside those who give to Centraide in the workplace,”
explained Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire. “It’s
the most beautiful image of social cohesion you can imagine.”
Centraide of Greater Montreal is an independent organization
managed by a board of directors which is representative of
the community. It serves the Island of Montreal, Laval, and
communities on the South Shore. Centraide of Greater Montreal
supports 350 community-based agencies and projects which offer
help and comfort to more than half a million people in need.
It relies on a network of over 67,000 volunteers, 22,000 of
whom work on its annual campaign.
